PE XPO

PE XPO

PE XPO is a competition aimed at encouraging students to research PE related topics. It examines the science behind sport and encourages students to develop their research skills to examine all elements of sport.

Every year a group of TY students enter the PE XPO competition which explores all topics sport. This year we had 5 groups enter with 16 students involved.

Some examples of projects this year include:

Recovery methods: this group explored various methods of recovery following performance/injury. They assessed stretching, ice baths and massage guns amongst other well known methods.

The effect of supplements on strength training: this group looked at the effect various energy drinks and performance supplements had on performance. They examined the use of lucozade, Monster energy drink, pre-workout and caffeine tablets with strength training.

How Coronavirus has affected our physical activity levels: this group surveyed members of the school community about levels and amounts of physical activity before and after Covid and the reasons for the drop in physical activity levels following the pandemic.

There are two categories for junior and senior students and you can enter a project under any one of the nine following areas:

  1. I.C.T. and Sports Photography
  2. Power of Sport- Inclusion & Cultural
  3. Wellbeing- Physical, Mental and Social
  4. Components of Fitness- the Science behind sport
  5. Nutrition
  6. Games Development & TGFU
  7. Sports Psychology
  8. Leaving Cert PE Project
  9. Senior Cycle PE Portfolio Project

The competition final was held in DCU on the 29th of March where each group were assessed by judges three times. The boys’ projects were highly praised and their innovation and enthusiasm were evident in their excellent reports.
